Black Individualism: More than Thy Self
Black Individualism: Where did it come from?
Half a lifetime ago, this idea came to me that every individual black person is responsible for his or her station in life. The core value or philosophy is that simple. The problem of course was that I was in my mid twenties and didn’t have the life experience to propose a philosophy of life.I still believe the core value that every person is responsible to their life, but over time may have added that they are responsible for even more than just Thy Self.
So after so many years, why has this idea reemerged in this mind? The simplest answer might be, “ I don’t really know”. But let me take an attempt at figuring this thing out.. The first recollection is that Something told me it was time to revisit the quasi-philosophy that I attempted to develop in my mid-twenties. Quasi-philosophy much like Ayn Rand. This is more a way of approaching life, than an academic pursuit that attempts to answer all of life’s questions. It is what I believe to be the healthiest approach to being Black or African-American in the United states. I will probably spend A decent amount of time and space proposing the reasons why I think this. The other reasons are intellectually just as satisfying, a mention on a blog came to my current wife when she was looking up my name online. The other is seeing (not actually reading and studying) copies of this philosophy when going through my parent’s things. In short there is something there that feels unfinished.
Now then, what does that mean for this blog and podcast? It means that I am going to write and talk about this core value, although I will venture into many topics that don’t come off as anything to do with individualism and.or being black in America. For me at least at the moment is calling something that I feel compelled and driven to do. The words and thoughts will come. I hope that they will have you come back again and again.
